Dando y dando, pajarito volando

Hola:

¿Cómo estás? Es, como siempre, un gusto estar otra semana más contigo.

En esta ocasión quiero hablarte de un dicho muy común: dando y dando pajarito volando. Usamos esta frase cuando hacemos un intercambio y queremos estar seguros de que la otra parte va a cumplir con lo prometido.

Significa que hasta que no me des o cumplas con tu parte yo no te daré o cumpliré con la mía. Lo usamos para asegurarnos de que el intercambio se llevará a cabo en el mismo momento, sin demoras de ningún tipo.

Se usa en situaciones informales y en tono divertido o jocoso.

Giving and giving, little bird flying

How are you? It is a pleasure to be another week here with you.

This time I’d like to tell you about a common saying we have in Mexico (and as far as I know it is present in other Spanish-speaking countries). The literal translation is giving and giving, little bird flying. I know it doesn’t make sense in English so I’m going to explain it and then give you some equivalent phrases in English.

We use this saying when we wake an exchange to emphasize fairness. It means: “I’ll give you something if you give me something right now”. No delays.

Some equivalent phrases in English might be:

• You scratch my back, I’ll scratch you.
• Quid pro quo.
• A fair trade.
• Deal’s a deal — now let’s trade.
• No freebies — it’s give and take.
• Cash on the barrelhead.

It’s often used in casual or humorous situations.
