Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day
Hello and welcome back to another post. Today I’d like to tell you about a particular day for us the people who live on the American continent. For years the 12th of October has been known as Christopher Columbus Day or the Day of the Race. We were encouraged to celebrate the encounter of two worlds.
As time passed, people started to question that celebration. After all we were celebrating a forced encounter. The Indigenous peoples of these lands did not invite Christopher Columbus or the invaders who followed him. The invasion was carried out with extreme violence and with the aim of erasing the languages, religions and customs from the Indigenous peoples.
Today, in Mexico, we celebrate the Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day. We celebrate the courage and struggle of Indigenous people to resist and preserve their languages, worldviews, and customs.
We could learn from each other and admire the traditions of other countries, but we should never allow that anything like the European invasion of the American continent to happen again.
No country is better than any other. No language is better than any other and no religion is truer than any other. I wish we could learn to share this planet in a peaceful way. I hope that one day no people will have to fear for their survival because of the existence of others.
Above you can find the book (in digital format) that the government published to commemorate this day. You can find a list of recommended readings, songs, movies and series. All the readings are translated into Spanish.
See you next time.
Muy interesante publicación, gracias por compartirlo.
